Hi, Please let me know who would like to join for an early evening meal - on Saturday evening 13th September - I have booked a table for eight at 5.45 pm at The Peak Hotel - they are dog friendly - they need the table back at 7.45pm but we can stay later in the pub if we wish - my phone number is 0771 4845036 and i’ll set up a whatsapp group for easier communication with anyone who sends me their tel number
Hi, I have been asked to take over the admin for this weekend - the following are John’s words and we’ll stick to the same walks as follow his plan. I hope all those who were going to attend, still will do, and perhaps more and we’ll think of John when we walk -
( John’s words) - I've put this on fairly early for if anyone wants to make a weekend out of it they'll need to book accommodation soon as the Peak District gets busy. However, anyone can join for just one day, whichever suits them better.
Friends, family and past members are welcome to join in.
Since most prople are staying in and around Castleton both walks will start from the Visitor Centre in Castleton at 10am. It's a good starting point as it's easy to find, there's parking, a tea room and public toilets.
Saturday 13/9/25: Starting from the Castleton Visitor Centre at 10am. A repeat of the walk that quite a few of us did on 8/9/24. Go up Cave Dale, then across the moor to Mam Tor then along the ridge to Hollins Cross then back down to Castleton. About 12km (7.5 miles). It's a great walk and last year the weather was pretty bad so let's hope for better weather this year 🤞
Sunday 14/9/25: Starting from the Castleton Visitors Centre at 10am. Go up to Hollins Cross then NE along the ridge, over Back Tor to Lose Hill. SE off the top down to Hope. Cross the river then follow the footpath back to Castleton. About 10km (6.25 miles).
Hope to see you all there.
Please confirm who is coming - Thank you, Judy

2,3 & 6 are good for me as accessible by rail.
sparky: I've noted your preferences, however, Parking in Hathersage is OK but parking in Edale is fairly limited.
Would you be coming for both days or just the one? If it's just the one would it be the Saturday or Sunday?
Would be a Saturday as work Sundays. Peak District is ok but need rail station nearby or rely on pick up since arriving via M6 and Manchester / Snake Pass for some. Lakes are fine since it's straight up from Blackpool (virtually).
sparky: depending on how many come and which walks we decide on, if we start from Castleton we can see if someone can give you a lift from the nearest station
Saturday definitely probably Sunday too
jojoesjoes: great stuff, see you in September
on 28/05/25 @ 20:24sparky: Hi, as you can see I've set both days starting from Castleton, that's what suits the majority of people. So, for you to join in, perhaps someone can give you a lift from one of the stations or there is a regular bus service to Castleton from Hope or Hathersage.
Thanks John, hopefully might make Saturday. Will look at bus timetables nearer the time to confirm. (Up 'The Steelmen / Well ?)
sparky: Aye, MFC are the Steel men, but unfortunately with the closure of the Ravenscraig there's now no steel made in Motherwell but MFC are still going strong.
I haven't used the buses but I'm quite sure that they run fairly regularly and nearer the time perhaps someone coming for the Saturday could be passing one of the stations.
Hi I’m new to this group. I live in Cambs and grew up between Lincoln/Sheffield and went to uni in Sheffield. I’ve done some peaks walking but not for many years and was hoping to join this walk for the weekend, and camp with my dog (v well behaved retriever). I’m a little nervous but wish to do this. I have fairly good fitness and walk the purbecks but not sure about the peaks. Can anyone recommend a campsite, and let me know if I am able to bring my youngest dog(6), Duke with me? Looking forward to meeting some of you on this group!
Bjg: Hi Bjg. You are very welcome to join the walks with well behaved dogs. I will be bringing my dog (working cocker spaniel aged 2).You don't say how you are camping (tent? van?). I will be staying at the Caravan & Motorhome club site in Castleton - brilliant but it doesn't take tents. There are a few other sites in the area but I don't know how good they are. Perhaps others can help you there.
SBSheilaBI’m on a farm camp site near mam tor . Can check the name but it is on pitch up and is only tents I think . Simple facilities and not expensive . Booked a while ago but may still be pitches
gogoing4goldSheilaB: tent
Frozen chips and peas working hard. Right knee caput. Hope better in time to join in Hope. Sweet Hope Cross by Edale End good for a walk out.
Chris Muris: Hi, Chris, sorry to hear about your knee and i hope it’s on the mend - are you planning to join the Castleton walks 13/14 Sept ( knee allowing?)
JAJudyAnnJudyAnn: yes! both days with cabin fever getting bad here. Seem camping slots round the corner at CMC Buxton. Knee being an absolute sod however so still not sure/ booking. Thank you.
Is a group meal planned Saturday night ? If so , should we consider booking a table somewhere ?
gogoing4goldgoing4gold: That’s an excellent idea - do you know the local pubs in Castleton - or i can have a look and see
on 05/09/25 @ 17:56Chris Muris: Hope your knee behaves and is ok by next weekend
JAJudyAnnNot sure. It’s a while since I’ve been . Happy to go with your suggestion
gogoing4goldgoing4gold: I have booked at The Peak Hotel - 17.45 - early meal!
JAJudyAnnAlways up for a meal.
peterbarker4472: Great!
JAJudyAnnI fell over a small wall last week when I was on holiday - stone cold sober but very careless :D I've fractured a bone in my foot so I won't be able to do the walks. Hope you all have a lovely time x
ElElliewalkerElliewalker: Sorry to hear this - wishing you a speedy recovery
JAJudyAnnThanks for booking Peak Hotel - that’s great .
on 10/09/25 @ 7:41Hi all
on 10/09/25 @ 7:43I’ve been asked by Judy Ann to lead the walks which I’m happy to do. I’m very familiar with the area and have run the two routes mentioned as a night run with head torches in the past - so you are safe with me - ??. Will look forward to following Johns plan and see you all at the visitors centre at 10.00 on Saturday
Can anyone who’s a maybe please update their invite response so we know how many people we are definitely waiting for and don’t leave anyone behind . My mobile is 07971664728
gogoing4goldgoing4gold: I'm sure we'll be safe with you but in case anyone needs to drop out of Saturday's walk I will have my map too. It is a gentle walk so hopefully everyone will be fine.
going4gold: Thank you so much for helping me out with this!
